We have brilliant news for vintage watch lovers and collectors. Sotheby’s will soon present the Rolex Daytona 6239 ‘Paul Newman’ of racing legend Jim Russell in the London Watches sale taking place on 24th September 2019. Jim Russell (1920-2019) is a successful racing driver, who founded the legendary Jim Russell Racing Driver School in 1956. Noteworthy alumni: Emerson Fittapaldi, Derek Bell, Tiff Needell, Danny Sullivan, Jacques Villeneuve, Jan Magnussen, Jenson Button and Lance Stroll.

Dating from circa 1968, the Rolex Daytona 6239 ‘Paul Newman’ is one of the most recognisable watches in the world and Jim Russell wore it for 50 years. Estimated at £60,000 - 90,000, Russell’s Rolex Daytona 6239 ‘Paul Newman’ will be offered alongside an impressive selection of vintage and modern wristwatches from a range of brands. Different price points, metals and complications will be offered, to suit all tastes.

The 139 timepieces in the sale will be viewable in Sotheby’s London galleries from 20th - 23rd September, alongside incredibly some hand-sketched “portraits” of watches by Canadian artist and illustrator Julie Kraulis. These realistic graphite drawings of vintage and modern timepieces are one-of-a-kind and can take up to 280 hours and 50 pencils to complete. The sketches in the exhibition will depict models of watches appearing in the auction, including a Rolex Submariner 5513, an Omega Speedmaster and a Lange & Söhne Datograph. If you are a watch fan, you do not want to miss this.
