ESCAPE FROM THE CITY: REVIEW OF CHAPEL HOUSE, PENZANCE, CORNWALL

Chapel House is a charming and picture perfect town house hotel located on Chapel Street, just moments from Penzance Harbour and the bustling local town. This impressive Georgian building boasts extensive sea views across Mounts Bay to St Michael’s Mount. Chapel Street is right next door to some beautiful independent boutiques selling art work and souvenirs made by local artisans, natural beauty products, books, home wares and local produce.

I am very drawn to boutique hotels that become a real home from home throughout the duration of my stay and Chapel House certainly ticked this box. Susan, the owner of the property, has gone to a real effort to ensure that guests are comfortable and nourished. On the stylish ground floor of the house, you’ll find an attractive lounge area with ample space to relax - there are vintage chairs and sofas, a piano and an array of board games and books to enjoy. Down another flight of stairs, you’ll find a large open plan kitchen / dining area, where food and drink are served.

Bedroom of Dreams

My bedroom was beautiful - a unique combination of original Georgian features and stylish contemporary comforts. Details such as the free standing bath, wood burning stove and arm chairs in the window instantly won me over and made me think that a rainy day in Penzance would be well spent indoors. The impressive en suite was equipped with a powerful rainforest shower and natural skincare products from Pure Nuff Stuff, made just around the corner! As I sipped my tea in bed and glanced out of the window to survey the picturesque streets below, I felt as though I was in an art-inspired movie set on the South West Coast, Elvis on the radio and the crackling fire providing a perfect soundtrack.

When the evening arrived, I wrapped up warm and ventured out for dinner. I was spoilt for choice. I opted for Sukothai, a great little Thai restaurant on Queen Street, just a short walk from Chapel House (the green tofu curry was excellent). People are generally super friendly in Penzance, so don’t be afraid to ask locals for advice on where to go / what to do. After dinner, I returned to Chapel House, lit the log burning fire in my room and spent a cosy evening in watching movies as the storm raced around the harbour and town outside. I do love a winter stay!

Wholesome Breakfast

In the morning, breakfast was prepared by Susan herself and served at the fantastic kitchen table. The menu is deliciously wholesome and seasonal, featuring fresh ingredients and lots of local produce. I decided on my usual avocado on toast, this time with chilli Cornish sea salt (it was so good I purchased some of the salt at a nearby deli), fresh fruit, granola, a green smoothie and a freshly brewed coffee. Susan’s food presentation is just as impeccable as the rest of the property and I was pleased I got the chance to properly catch up with her over a brilliant breakfast.

New Suites

I caught a glimpse of the brand new suites that are very nearly ready for action. Susan and her architect, Keith, have been busy designing some impressive, sustainable, self-catering suites that are suitable for family and friend groups. The suites have excellent views of the harbour and benefit from outstanding natural light - perfect for relaxing and entertaining. There is a Nordic feel to the decor - lots of textured wooden surfaces, a wood-burning stove and bold colours create a feeling of warmth, comfort and character.

The Verdict

I enjoyed a flawless stay at Chapel House and would thoroughly recommend the hotel for those travelling alone or with friends / loved ones. The location is perfect for spring, summer, autumn and winter visits to Penzance. Nearby hotspots I recommend:

The Jubilee Pool | Trewidden Garden | St Ives | Tate St Ives | Porthmeor Beach | St Michael’s Mount | Isles of Scilly | Eden Project | Penwith | Golowan Festival | Newlyn
